His personality, behavior, and inherent characteristics are what makes one’s identity. Many people, mostly in their teenage years, have obstacles obstructing their views of who they really are on the inside, and their true human nature. In the novels The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the main protagonists have a difficult time coming of age because they do not realize who they really are. Amir forsakes his only friend because of his guilt toward Hassan, and Gene indirectly kills his best friend because of a blind impulse filled with animosity, fearing that Finny wanted to graduate on a higher stature of hierarchy than him. Both main characters later realize what they have done, and the guilt which both face, becomes the driving desire for them to earn their redemption. Throughout the life stories of both characters, both characters exhibit traits and realizations about growi ng up, but Amir in The Kite Runner definitely reveals true human nature by coming of age in a more realistic way. When plagued by doubt, guilt, and jealousy, Gene holds the boiling steam inside until it bursts out with serious consequences. Gene resents his decisions after looking back on his actions.
